Optimum angle of view - beautiful portraits
The 85 mm lens from Samyang is an ideal focal length, it delivers concentration on the essential. On a full-frame camera, its 29° angle of view provides optimal concentration on the picture element. When the 85/1.4 is mounted on an APS-C camera, the angle of view is 19°, which is roughly equivalent to the image impression of a 135 mm lens. The same 85 mm on a 4/3 camera has an image effect even like a 170 mm of the full format camera and that again at 1.4 aperture. This very practical aperture of 1.4 never changes, which not only provides an extremely bright viewfinder, but also the possibility of cropping through the smallest depth of field. The lens is very well corrected and convinces with very good and distortion-free imaging performance. The very compact design provides comfortable handling with a well-balanced centre of gravity.
Superior lens speed
The high lens speed of this Samyang lens allows the use of shorter exposure times or lower ASA values. This significantly reduces image noise on digital cameras. The large aperture with shallow depth of field optimises the position of the plane of focus in the viewfinder. A practical side benefit of the high light intensity is the highlighting/extracting of the subject in front of an out-of-focus foreground or background.
High-quality optics and mechanics
The lens is equipped with internal focusing and offers a closest focusing distance of 100 cm. With 9 lenses in 7 groups, it is very elaborately built, calculated for optimum performance already at open aperture. When focusing, lens elements are shifted internally: the overall length of the optics therefore does not change and the 72mm filter thread does not rotate when focusing. The iris diaphragm has 8 blades and an almost circular aperture. The progression into blur is harmoniously reproduced with fine bokeh. Of course, all lens surfaces are multi-coated to increase the contrast of the images and to avoid reflections if necessary. Everything is rounded off by precise mechanics, clearly latching aperture values and production in a high-quality metal mount.
Advantages of a full-frame lens on a camera with an APS-C sensor
Save time in post-processing. A lot of lens aberrations like distortion, edge blur or vignetting occur on the outer areas of the image. If you use a lens calculated for full format on a camera with an APS-C sensor, these areas are not used. This way you get the maximum quality. Additional post-processing time to correct lens errors is therefore not necessary.
