The Samyang 135 mm T2.2 lens brings details closer without bringing the typical, gripping telephoto effect into the picture. It is more than superior to the standard Vario lens of the digital camera due to its freedom from distortion and aperture. The lens can be operated in a hand-held fashion, even snapshots can be taken with this focal length without any problems. Users of an APS-C camera will be pleased: they finally got a medium-length landscape lens, corresponding to the image impression of a 200 mm 35mm lens, and still with a fabulous aperture that allows safe working and unprecedented shots.
Excellent light intensity
Usually the maximum aperture (lens speed) of a lens is 135 mm at F2.8 or F3.5. Especially with this medium-length landscape and portrait focal length, a larger aperture has often been missed - or is simply difficult to afford. The Samyang 135 mm with an initial aperture of T2.2 is 100% brighter than its competitors. This not only makes it possible to take pictures hand-held in critical lighting conditions, but it also brings creative highlights by allowing the subject to be almost detached from the backgropund: the depth of field is half that of a 135 mm with F2.8 aperture. At the same time, the viewfinder is twice as bright, which helps enormously with image evaluation. The image angle is 19° with full frame, 12° with APS C cameras and 9.5° with Micro Four Third (MFT) cameras.
High quality optics
The lens has a very innovative optical design: with 11 lenses in 7 groups, it also provides excellent imaging at close range together with a lens made of high-refractive ED glass. The close-up limit is deliberately kept very low at 80 cm - the focus on detail is easy with this lens. Mechanically it is designed in such a way that the barrel does not rotate during focusing (makes the use of 77 mm polarizing filters much easier) and the overall length does not change, regardless of whether you are working at infinity or at 80 cm focusing distance. This is achieved by a second inner barrel, which is moved to the focus position within the outer mount. Another advantage: the centre of gravity remains almost the same during focusing. The fine focus distribution is achieved by an almost circular aperture with 9 blades. All glass surfaces are of course coated with Samyang's own ultra multi-coating UMC.
Ready for Follow Focus
The focus ring and the aperture ring feature gear rings so that they can be combined with Follow Focus systems on camera rigs. This allows the Camera Assistant to remotely or manually adjust the focus during take, and to change the aperture to adjust the brightness of the image as the camera moves through areas of varying brightness.
Why the aperture is sometimes given in T
In photography, the abbreviation "f" is used for aperture (from "focal length"). The given value indicates the ratio between focal length and entrance pupil at the lens. In film and video, on the other hand, the abbreviation "T", which stands for "transmission", is used. This value is calculated from the aperture f and the loss of light in the individual lens. It indicates the net brightness of the image that hits the sensor. This makes it possible to change the lens when filming: As long as the same "T-Stop" is selected for both, it is guaranteed that two shots of the same scene filmed with the two different lenses are equally bright. Thus, no jumps in brightness occur when the two clips are edited together.
Advantages of a full frame lens on a camera with APS-C sensor (or smaller)
Save time in post-processing: A variety of lens defects such as distortion, blur, or vignetting appear on the edges of the image. If you use a full-frame lens on a camera with an APS-C sensor, these areas will not be used in the first place. Thus, you automatically get the maximum quality and no additional time for correcting lens errors needs needs to be invested in post-processing.
